Embrace the Chaos: Capturing Real Moments in Family Sessions

As a Western MA family photographer, one of my favorite things about photographing families is the beautiful unpredictability that comes with kids — especially when there are five of them! Recently, I photographed a family with four energetic boys and their sweet baby sister, and it reminded me once again that perfection isn’t the goal.

Perfect Doesn’t Mean Picture-Perfect

Trying to achieve “perfect” family photos — where everyone is looking, smiling, and sitting still — is nearly impossible (and honestly, it’s not what makes the best images!). Instead, I encourage families to embrace the chaos. Let the kids run around, chase each other, and be themselves. That’s when the real magic happens — genuine smiles, laughter, and authentic moments that truly capture your family as it is right now.

Variety is Key

During every session, I make sure to capture a wide variety of photos. Of course, we’ll do the classic group shots, but I always include individual portraits of each child, photos of just the brothers, maybe the youngest siblings together, and of course — just mom and dad.

When I’m hired for family photos, my goal is to create a mix of portraits and lifestyle moments — images that feel balanced between polished and playful.

Why Session Pricing Changes with Larger Families

I often get asked why session pricing goes up for families of five or more. The answer is simple: more people means more faces, more editing, and more coordination! With larger families, there are more group combinations to photograph, and posing takes extra care to make sure everyone looks their best and feels included.

Each session is customized to make sure everyone gets their moment in front of the camera — which means extra time and attention go into both shooting and editing.

Helping Little Ones Feel Comfortable

For younger kids, I like to bring or suggest something small for them to hold — a flower, a little toy, or even a favorite leaf or pinecone they find during the shoot. Having something in their hands gives them focus and helps keep them comfortable in front of the camera.

Sometimes the best photos happen when we stop worrying about everyone looking at the camera and just let the moment unfold naturally.

The Beauty of Real Family Moments

At the end of the day, what matters most isn’t perfection — it’s connection. Family photos are about freezing this exact stage of life: the giggles, the chaos, the in-between moments that you’ll miss someday.

So when you book a session with me, come ready to play, laugh, and embrace whatever unfolds. I’ll handle the rest.
